The Compass Rose

This journey we call life can often feel like navigating uncharted waters. Even when we have designed the 1-3-5-10 year plans, we can never plan for the curve balls we encounter. So we adapt, learning and growing into who we think we should be. If I was on a yacht right now, the depth gauge alarm would probably be sounding! Danger! Why? Because I said “should”! Should is just another word for expectation. An if those expectations are not met – well the lighthouse I mentioned in the 3-Point Fix, might just be your destruction instead of your salvation.

Every compass you look at will have the four cardinal points; north, south east and west on it, the most prominent being north. But did you know there 3 types of north! True North, Magnetic North and Grid North. The one we care about today is true north. ‘True North’ on a compass is the direction that points exactly towards the geographic north pole, a fixed point on this plant we call home. In any navigation a fixed point, a constant, a invaluable. It gives you guidance and direction.

I like to think of true north in my own personal growth journey as the fixed point where everything is aligned. My spirituality, wellbeing, love, career and finances are all aligned and I am living in my fullest vision and purpose. So how do we get to our true north?

As a sailor I consider one of the most important instruments on board a compass. Did you know the first magnetic compass was invented in approximately 206 BC in China? It wasn’t [I believe] until the 15th century that we recognised that north on a compass was different to ‘true north’. The Compass Rose is a printed compass on a chart, and it helps us get our bearings. Don’t worry I am not going to make you recall all the trigonometry and algebra required in sailing! I have learnt throughout my personal growth journey that self-kindness is an important instrument in my life. So to implement self-kindness and take a bearing I utilised the compass rose in the following way. I want you to think of the cardinal points as a focus area to develop you practice of self-kindness.

NORTH: Compassion

Acknowledge the importance of self-compassion being the first step towards embracing the imperfection, and leaving behind comparison. Remember how kind you would be to a loved one and direct that voice and use that tone intentionally with yourself. Compassion is the foundation, the true north, of self-kindness.

SOUTH: Gratitude

In the south, drop your anchor, and settle into gratitude. Take the time to be thankful for all you have and appreciate the trials and tribulations. The blessings, big and small, surround us in every moment; all we have to do is look for them, it will cultivate contentment and resilience.

EAST: Affirmations

As the sun rises in the east, it is the perfect direction and time of day to speak love and positivity into your life. Define who you want to be in alignment with your values and aspirations. Practice daily and this narrative will help you weather and storm of self-doubt.

WEST: Reflection

Bask in the sunset, appreciate the beauty and wonder of it as you reflect on how far you have come. Celebrate you victories and triumphs of the day, the trial and the triumph. Note the lessons learned, capture the successes, get curious about where you can improve. Reflection is vital to help you test and adjust your course.

In the ever-changing seas on our journey, the daily practice of self-kindness, using the four cardinal points of a compass, serves as your guide as you navigate the current of self-doubt, perfectionism, expectation and the inner-critic. Check your bearings on the Waypoint Compass Rose and navigate your journey with intention, gratitude, and a gentle touch.
